This year’s theme, “African Americans and Labor,” focuses on work “free and unfree, skilled and unskilled,” referring to the many types of work Black people have done throughout history. This month, we shine a bright light on a historic, courageous Black leader, Harriet Tubman, who sought her own freedom and that of others as dedicated humanitarian, abolitionist, suffragist and human rights activist. She also served as an operator of the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses to help enslaved African Americans escape to freedom. Baldwin and Tubman remind us that celebrating the history of others enriches us all.
