Community Life is out of this world!
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…a day in May became an annual celebration—especially for some dedicated residents (aka as prospective Jedis). As they say, “May the ‘fourth’ be with you!”
Residents shifted their focus from humans to canines during a recent project in the culinary teaching kitchen. Brooke Moorhead, First Place lead employment specialist, guided everyone through baking dog biscuits for delivery to the Arizona Humane Society. The homemade treats should bring some joy to pets awaiting their forever homes!
May means Mother’s Day, so residents headed to the Cox Community Room to enjoy a group project of creating lovely, unique cards with their own special touch from a plethora of art supplies. The common thread among the masterpieces? A shared love of moms and grandmas.

Monthly “Social Savvy” workshops bring residents together for a community meal and the opportunity to practice social skills, including being an active listener and learning how to keep conversations interesting. These beneficial (and well attended!) gatherings help residents successfully navigate aspects of more independent living, including self-advocacy, friendships and employment.

Congratulations to all the First Place Transition Academy graduates who recently walked across the stage, proudly received their diplomas, and confidently marched on with greater independent living and career readiness skills. First Place’s Learn4Independence® curriculum, taught at the Transition Academy in collaboration with Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC), prepares adults with autism to live more independently. Fifth annual stage event offers mystery, mischief—and lots of laughs.
The smashing success of the fifth annual First Place–Phoenix stage performance was no mystery to family, friends and fans in the audience. Residents brought “How to Get Away with a Murder Mystery” by Don Zolidis to the stage with comedic, colorful flair that elicited lots of laughs throughout and much-deserved avid applause at the end. Always a favorite part of the evening for all: waiting outside Phoenix Center for the Arts to hail the actors as they descend the stairs with pride—none of which would be possible without the longtime support of Arizona Commission on the Arts!
K2 Fitness AND Fashion!
Residents might have had smiles on their faces, but they were serious about their fitness during a recent workout at Results Only Fitness. More smiles were saved for the annual K2 Adventures Foundation Summer in the City Luncheon and Fashion Show, where residents showed their poise and pride as they paraded down the runway.
Topping off the event was First Place resident Whitney, who delivered a beautiful speech that spoke to every heart in the room. Thank you, K2 Adventures Foundation, for your ongoing support—you’ve proven that compassion never goes out of fashion!

Earth Day reminds us of our connection to our precious planet. A recent visit to the Desert Botanical Garden gave First Place–Phoenix residents an opportunity to reflect on that—surrounded by flora, fauna and friends!
A healthy, colorful meal was on Chef Titina’s menu for her latest visit to First Place–Phoenix. Residents got down to chopping and sautéing before sitting down to enjoy a delicious meal, with baked salmon the main attraction. Chef Titina is always full of culinary surprises—bet you’ve never tasted a watermelon radish!

The multifaceted benefits of crafty residents’ creativity.
Spring has sprung at First Place–Phoenix! Thanks again to creative craft time made possible by K2 Adventures Foundation, residents recently gathered to add personal flair to bright butterflies—and some splash on the walls in their apartments. Next, they showed up to show some heartfelt appreciation for First Place–Phoenix staff. Combining cards, pens and stickers supplied by K2’s ongoing generosity, they crafted some colorful messages to those dedicated to supporting them on their paths to more independent, joyful living.
If it’s March, it’s time to visit with the majestic, gentle giants at Hunkapi horse farm where Scottsdale still offers unpaved desert beauty. Residents learned how to communicate by syncing their breath with the horses’ to encourage calmness and trust. Everyone shared a collective sigh during a tranquil trek around the grounds.
Residents are always reaching new heights. Recently, that meant the adventure of scaling the climbing wall at Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center. How about a virtual high-five to everyone who took on this daunting challenge!

It’s about planning, shopping, prepping and storing. Every Friday, the First Place–Phoenix supports team works with a small group of residents to focus on a single recipe, working through each delicious detail to work on their culinary skills—and healthier eating. Bon appétit!

Residents reach new heights at Cardinals Climb.
First Place–Phoenix was well represented this past Saturday for the inaugural Cardinals Climb celebrating inclusion, community and possibility. Residents showed up ready to take on the stadium steps, joining more than 3,500 participants at the inaugural Cardinals Climb, which collectively raised over $2 million for the special needs community across Arizona. “Steep” steps for a great cause! After the climb, First Place hosted a resource table to share information on housing, healthcare, employment and civic engagement through Vote the Spectrum®.

Members of First Place AZ’s Vote the Spectrum® team joined dozens of self-advocates and community partners downtown for the 2026 Arizona Disability Day at the Capitol hosted by the Arizona Disability Advocacy Coalition. Self-advocates also spoke with legislators, sharing lived experiences and priorities—and stressed the importance of disability voices being heard as Arizona approaches key budget decisions.
Events like this highlight the impact of inclusive civic engagement—and reinforce Vote the Spectrum’s mission to ensure individuals with disabilities have the tools, confidence and opportunities to fully participate—so democracy works better for everyone!

The Disability Advocacy Policy Alliance held a “Lunch with Legislators” to amplify self-advocate voices and create space for direct dialogue with policymakers on issues shaping daily life for individuals with disabilities. First Place–Phoenix residents and staff attended to highlight lived experience and inform policymakers on core priorities across housing, education, health and human services, and employment. First Place–Phoenix attendees representing District 5 also met with their Senator Lela Alston.

January ushers in the new year—along with rehearsals for the annual First Place–Phoenix theater performance made possible by a Lifelong Arts Engagement Grant from Arizona Commission on the Arts. Residents recently gathered with a volunteer grad student from ASU’s Design & Arts Corps to discuss details and roles for the 2026 production of the comedy whodunit, “How to Get Away with a Murder Mystery.” They also got into the stage spirit with some very entertaining role-playing. The annual Holiday Tour of Doors (#4!) is always a don’t-miss, heartwarming trek through residents’ unlimited creativity. Everyone ambled down the halls to ooh and ah at decorated doors before voting for their favorites; and our very own bookkeeper Tommy Saenz provided some merry tunes on the piano. Who could resist s’mores and cocoa out on the patio afterward—and who knew the Grinch lived here?
Every day’s a good day to play dreidel during Hanukkah! Residents recently tried their hand at the traditional Jewish game of spinning a dreidel (Yiddish for “top”). The person with the most tokens at the end of many spins wins!
Age is insignificant at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park’s ever-popular Holiday Lights experience. Join First Place–Phoenix residents on a recent, wondrous glittering train ride through a true holiday wonderland!

They recently experienced FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse, a multisensory art exhibit evoking the visual and emotional energy of the Sonoran Desert. It was a visit filled with captivating cacti and superlative-inducing succulents!

Caren Zucker is a journalist, co-author of the 2016 book “In a Different Key,” co-producer/co-director of the award-winning 2020 documentary of the same name and Mickey’s Mom. She tells us how Mickey’s diagnosis turned her into an ardent advocate for her son and all individuals with autism.
JaLynn Prince is founder and president of Madison House Autism Foundation, a changemaking organization advocating for the full—and fulfilling—inclusion of adults with autism in the life of their communities. She tells us how her son, Madison, motivates her work and feeds her passion for change.

Every year, the amazing people at National Bank of Arizona bring together nearly 30 of the Valley’s best food and beverage vendors for a lively and fun-loving fundraiser—and this year, they chose First Place AZ as the beneficiary! Community Life connects residents with animals for some reciprocal TLC.
The resident horses at Hunkapi Farms in north Scottsdale are getting to know the residents of First Place–Phoenix well! They’ve been to the farm many times over the past couple of years and always enjoy caring for the gentle beasts. That care includes grooming, leading—and loving—the horses, who are always only too happy with the attention.
There’s always an enthusiastic turnout for a chance to head to First Place–Phoenix community partner Arizona Animal Welfare League for a visit with furry friends awaiting forever homes. Residents also benefit from practicing skills that can transfer well—communication, professionalism and following instructions—to employment opportunities. Plus they get to love on lots of friendly dogs and cats who are always happy to see them!

Holiday gatherings and cooler weather mean one thing: It’s time to make sure we’re all healthy! The Phoenix Fire Department recently hosted a COVID and flu vaccine clinic for First Place–Phoenix residents while students from Creighton School of Nursing checked vital signs and gave a presentation on the importance of hygiene. It always helps to add some fun, so everyone also played a game of hygiene bingo and participated in an experiment demonstrating the effectiveness of handwashing. Thank you, Phoenix Fire Department and Creighton nursing students—it’s good to have neighbors helping us look after our well-being!

First Place AZ honored at Phoenix Mayor’s 2025 Disability Awards and Recognition Event (D.A.R.E.).
At the recent Disability Awards and Recognition Event (D.A.R.E.) presented by the Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues and the Equal Opportunity Department, First Place AZ was proud to receive the Outstanding Non-Profit Award. The greatest honor was to be in the company of so many compassionate, generous organizations and individuals—many of whom also received awards. In her speech, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego affirmed the city’s commitment to be the most accessible city in America. Thank you to everyone helping make that a reality!
Linda M. Herold Lifetime Achievement Award
When In Business Magazine honored 15 leaders from different segments of Arizona’s economy at the recent 2025 Women of Achievement luncheon, our very own Denise D. Resnik received special recognition with the Linda M. Herold Lifetime Achievement Award. After more than 30 years dedicated to making this a better world for people with autism and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities, it was a proud moment for Denise’s family and friends, First Place AZ, SARRC and everyone who has worked with her on this journey. When the First Place Global Leadership Institute and Madison House Autism Foundation first published A Place in the World® (APITW) in 2020, we provided the first-ever resource aimed at meeting housing and community needs and preferences of adults with autism and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities. With the 2025 publishing of the third edition, APITW’s universal language has been expanded and underscores the importance of broader community solutions. Another Be Ready® graduation!
The third cohort of the Be Ready® workforce/workplace development initiative recently enjoyed a well-deserved graduation ceremony after many weeks of hard work and collaboration. Cohort #3 brings the total number of graduates to date to 28—with more to come! This growing innovative program was developed by First Place to bridge the gap between employers seeking talented workers and neurodiverse individuals ready for meaningful employment. Kudos, grads—and best of luck on your employment journeys!

“Feeling at home” took on special meaning recently when Linda J. Walder, founder and executive director of The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation for Adult Autism, stopped by First Place–Phoenix for an exceptionally expressive art project. Linda, her associate Vicki Gentempo Ofmani and residents explored together what home feels like—in pictures and words.
UNO is ONE popular game at First Place–Phoenix! Residents gathered for a recent tournament—cheering each other on, shedding their cards and waiting to see who would be the ONE and only UNO champion.
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, First Place–Phoenix residents enjoyed an afternoon of friends, family and authentic flavors. Together with Employment Administration Coordinator Marcy Laguna and her family, they created a tasty lunch and some lasting memories.
Of the 365 days each year, World Mental Health Day feels especially important. Created by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992, the goal is to raise awareness of and support for mental health issues. Just by talking about it, we can help reduce stigma—a big step toward making mental healthcare a reality worldwide.

Commissioned by EmpowerMe Living and made possible by a grant from Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the Greater Cincinnati Neuro-Inclusive Housing Market Analysis is the first to include representation of individuals with Down syndrome.

First Place Senior Graphic Designer Alyssa Land and renowned photographer Scott Baxter recently reviewed a stunning series of photographs for an exciting new exhibition focused on the contributions of neurodivergent employees in the workplace. The exhibition will premiere during Dimensions 2025 in October in conjunction with a presentation on the First Place Be Ready℠ employment readiness program.
Lively community life in September: Clever Cooking, crafting and casting for next year’s musical!
The First Place–Phoenix teaching kitchen was full for this month’s collaborative meal with Chef Titina, who guided residents through creating fresh fish tacos with all the fixings.
Salt is great on popcorn and French fries. First Place–Phoenix residents recently discovered it’s pretty good on art, too. Check out the latest craft—salt paintings—they made this month in the First Place Space to Create. Just don’t expect pepper paintings anytime soon!
There was an enthusiastic show of interest during the first theater workshop of the season! Residents gathered with Kenya Thompson, student at ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts School of Music, Dance and Theatre, for some fun icebreakers—including games and creative activities—to start building the ensemble for next spring’s First Place–Phoenix musical. New executive director at the helm of Different Brains
First Place AZ congratulates Debbi Siegel on her appointment as executive director of Different Brains, a nonprofit that “supports, educates and celebrates neurodivergent individuals by fostering understanding and building a more inclusive world,” as noted on its website. Debbi follows in the footsteps of the late Dr. Harold “Hackie” Reitman, founder of Different Brains, who passed away in March—a great loss to our community of champions for the cause. Dr. Reitman’s son Asa, who has Asperger’s syndrome, inspired his life’s work.
“Hackie was an extraordinary force and early adopter supporting the vision of both SARRC and First Place,” said Denise D. Resnik, founder and president/CEO of First Place AZ/First Place Global. “A remarkable amplifier and connector, he encouraged and supported our every step.”
Different Brains and its dynamic team, along with the entire neurodiverse community, will greatly miss Hackie—and benefit from Debbi’s extensive personal experience and professional expertise.
